Composition: Blocking

In filmmaking, composition is another important factor of camerawork used by many filmmakers to direct the eyes of the audience to the right places of the frame, centering the focus of the audience to one area in the scene. In this blog, the techniques of composition will be discussed with one of the four categories: Rule of Thirds, Balance, Blocking and Depth of Field. The next blogs will continue discussing composition.

Blocking:

Like balance, blocking also as two sections, namely, leading lines and shapes. Leading lines in film is explained as the lines in the frame that are used to draw eyes to the subject of the frame. Take a bridge between cities for example; the lines formed by the roads and the cable of the bridge lead to the center of the frame, where the subject is. This is considered an example of leading lines because the lines lead the eyes of the audience towards the subject of the frame. Shapes, on the other hand, are much simpler, mainly because there are shapes created in the frame intentionally to make the frame aesthetically pleasing.
